Pants, like shirts, are one of the easiest ways to diversify your wardrobe, and they enable you to wear sport coats and blazers without being redundant throughout your week. And pants are on the front lines of wear and tear, so it makes sense to have a well-stocked closet.

Work with one of our Professional Clothiers, who has all the latest swatches for pants to choose from, and together you can create a pants collection that complements your existing jackets.

Here’s a quick guide to help you understand your options:

PLEATS

Plain Front (also known as flat front): no pleats, slimmer fitting, clean lines

Double Reverse Pleats: when the pleats open toward your pockets, more traditional, roomier fit

Double Forward Pleats: when the pleats open toward your zipper, more old-school (think 1930s Britain), typically on pants with a higher rise

We offer all three, and you’ll work with your Professional Clothier to decide. Ultimately, your decision comes down to personal preference and fit (especially for pleats, which you’d want to fall straight down and not gape open). But that’s the beauty of going custom: it’s made to fit just you.

CUFFS

Our general rule of thumb? No pleats, no cuffs.

We also want your pants to last a long time. (We’re sure you do, too.) So we’ve addressed one of the most common wear-and-tear areas—the back of the cuff. This area is subject to a lot of friction as it moves against your shoe. Our answer? Guard the hem with an extra strip of material we sew on the inside back side of the cuff.

POCKETS AND WAISTBANDS

All Astor & Black trousers have stiffer, thicker waistbands that are reinforced to prevent rolling so they look great without a belt. You will also find a rubberized strip around the inner waistband to keep your shirt from untucking or moving around.

Hidden Cash Pocket

Don’t forget the hidden cash pocket, one of those finishing touches that seems entirely unnecessary, but you can’t live without it once you have it. A small pocket hidden in the waistband of your pants, it’s ready to hold cash, an ID, a hotel key, or anything else you wish to keep discreetly tucked away.
